Case Study: Taylor Swift’s re-recording of her old albums

Last updated 2 years ago

Recently, Taylor Swift released a new version of her older albums including Red, Fearless, and many more.

Initially, she signed to Big Machine Records in 2005. They used to manage all her royalties and distribute them accordingly for her. Then in 2018, this contract ended and she signed with Universal’s Republic Records. But recently she stated that an artist must own his/her work. And to do so, she is re-recording the albums which are not completely owned by her.

In doing so, she is making sure that all the music royalties of her songs are under her control only and no one can take advantage of her hard work.

Swift has written, played, and sung each of the songs that people can listen to now. Hence, she can do it all again to gain complete rights and ownership of her songs.

The master rights of her original songs got sold for a whopping $140 million. Now, in 2022, her net worth is found to be $400 million.

Billboard reports that the publishing royalties for Swift’s catalog in 2017 likely earned around $59,000 in just a single week from streaming alone. This indicates that she is making a lot of money from her song royalties.

More than her, the labels which owned most of the royalties for her old albums are making some big money. So you know how this has become a passive income for the investors of her songs.
